Learning to Slow Down: My First Roll of Film

I started shooting film not because I wanted to be nostalgic, but because I wanted to understand what would happen if I stopped seeing results immediately.

At that point, I had already spent some time with digital photography. I was used to checking the screen, adjusting, trying again. The process was efficient, and efficiency was comforting. Film, on the other hand, offered none of that. Once I loaded the roll, there was nothing to review, nothing to correct in the moment. Every frame moved forward whether I was confident or not.

That uncertainty was exactly what drew me in.

Shooting film forced me to slow down in a way I hadn’t experienced before. I began paying more attention before pressing the shutter, not because I was trying to be careful, but because each frame felt limited. I walked more, I waited longer, sometimes I didn’t take the photo at all. The absence of instant feedback quietly changed my behavior.

I also noticed how my relationship with mistakes shifted. With digital, mistakes felt easy to fix or repeat. With film, they were simply part of the roll. Overexposed frames, missed focus, awkward compositions - they stayed, and I learned to accept them without judgment. Not every photograph needed to work, not every moment needed to be kept.

Waiting for the film to be developed became part of the experience. Days passed. Sometimes longer. When the scans finally arrived, I looked at them slowly, without the urge to delete or compare. Some images surprised me, others confirmed what I already knew. The time in between had softened my expectations.

What stayed with me most wasn’t the look of film itself, but the rhythm it introduced. Shooting became less reactive and more deliberate. I started trusting my instincts rather than correcting them immediately. I began to understand that photography didn’t always need speed to feel alive.

Film didn’t replace digital for me, and it wasn’t meant to. It simply taught me something essential early on - that slowing down wasn’t a limitation, but a choice.

That lesson carried forward, long after the roll was finished.
